What is Battery
Here we’ll explain you brief introduction and explanation about various batteries, their comparison, their selection and various parameter required to define batteries, and how to select batteries for Quadcopter/Multirotors.
The first question is WHAT IS BATTERY?
The answer to this question is :
Batteries are basically combination of three parts anode, cathode, and electrolytes. When we are going to connect any device with it, there is an electrochemical reaction occurs and due to some chemical reaction it generates energy. First battery was made by Volta in 1977 using brine soaked cardboards and metal plates. Now a days there are manufactured various batteries which has more capacity, power, accuracy, and low cost etc. features.
Batteries use for QUADCOPTER / MULTIROTORS
Batteries available in the market are in form of cell. Each cell generate some amount of voltage and current which is predefined and mentioned in the specification list. And number of cells depends on our requirement that is what flight time we want to gained by our drones, their pay load etc. Generally we are using 3 cell batteries for limited feature Quadcoter / Multirotor.
Types of Batteries
Here we’ll discuss about various types of batteries present in the market, their advantages and disadvantages and how to make a selection for the batteries.
- NiMH Batteries
- NiCd Batteries
- Lead Acid Batteries
- LIPO Batterie
Nickel metal hydride (NiMH) Batteries has more energy density as compared to NiCd Batteries. But these type of batteries contains less cycles between 200-300 so their Battery life is less as comparison to other batteries.
These type of batteries has some advantages like High discharge rate, long Battery life, and economical price, it has various huge disadvantages like unfriendly towards environment, contains toxic chemicals, low energy density etc. these type of batteries are use in radio, remote control etc.
Lead Acid Batteries
These type of batteries are more economical, high power, low self-discharge, but it has a big disadvantage due its power/weight ratio. It has much weight and size as compared to other batteries are available in the market. These are use in wheel chair, car, Small low price ROBOTS etc.
On that days these type of batteries are mostly in demand because lithium polymer batteries are economical, it has high energy density, low self –discharge rate, high power, not any contains toxic chemicals these battery are commonly use in quadcopter and multirotors due to their high efficiency, light weight, low weight/volt ratio, required less maintenance as compared to other batteries etc.
